The programme Skills Development for Youth Employment – SKYE funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in collaboration with FarmAgric Foundation for Agriculture will train 500 young Nigerians in agriculture on the basics of modern agricultural practices, agri-business and farmer corporative methods. 

Speaking on the project, the Executive Director of FarmAgric Foundation for Agriculture Ms. Veronica Valentine said “the project which is tagged ASAP {Agricultural Skill Acquisition Program} was borne out of the need to sustain agriculture by efficiently equipping the next generation of farmers with all the necessary tools to thrive in our fast evolving society. She explained that “The objectives of the ASAP are to efficiently train young people on contemporary agricultural techniques, create awareness on standardized farming practices and make financial aid available to outstanding trainees.

Through this program, 500 youths will be equipped with requisite skills and knowledge through theoretical and practical agricultural trainings; in order to create income generating employment opportunities and ventures.

At the end of the project, youth participation and interest in agriculture would have significantly increased. Direct and indirect employment opportunities would be created – decreasing unemployment rate and enhancing economic growth. There also exists ample avenues for other stakeholders –governements and private individuals- in the agricultural sector to plugin to this project.”

The program manager of the ASAP project, Mr Alli Bob Cinwon said “I am very excited at the level of commitment the German Corporation has towards investing in Nigerian youths. The positive ripple effect this would have on youth engagement, youth empowerment and the economy will be far reaching. This is an opportunity that every young person with interests in agriculture should not miss”.

According to the program manager, application for the program is open till 10th January 2020 to youths within the ages of 18-35 who reside within the FCT. Sessions will commence in Abuja on the 13th January 2020 and will end on the 4th December 2020.

The programme Skills Development for Youth Employment – SKYE, is a four-year programme funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. SKYE focuses on the acquisition of knowledge and skills for the labour market through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to tackle unemployment and underemployment, root causes of irregular migration and socio-economic degradation in Nigeria. The programme is addressing the supply and demand sides of the integrated employment approach by focusing on improving the quality of TVET in the labour-intensive construction and agriculture sectors and the occupational field of industrial mechanics. SKYE promotes public and private stakeholder dialogues about TVET and supports Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

The FarmAgric foundation is an Initiative of FarmAgric, a technology-driven agricultural company that empowers farmers through the provision of required capital and inputs using funds raised from the investing public.
