Paramount ruler of the Tiv nation, Tor Tiv, Orchivirgh, James Ayatse has stated his resolve to work with relevant bodies and organisations to bring down the poverty level in the Tiv nation and Benue state at large through modern farming techniques.
One of such moves was his recent visit to South Africa where he addressed the Summit on Agric Investment Indaba (AAII), 2017 on the topic: “Driving Economies of Scales to Ensure Sustainability and Competitiveness in Today’s Farming Environment” as an Exclusive VIP Guest Speaker.
The Paramount ruler, who spoke with the press in Makurdi noted that while the summit would immensely benefit the Benue people whose mainstay is agriculture, said it would also address the issues of poverty, unemployment and insecurity.
He stressed that he was not satisfied with the level of peasant agriculture being practiced by the Tiv people “because it has not been able to take us out of poverty.”
Ayatse further said the “Poverty index in Tiv nation and Benue at large is too high, therefore to bring it down, I hope to mobilise human and material resources within and outside Nigeria to help train and equip my people especially the youths for modern agricultural practices, for greater output.
“The Tiv Traditional Council under my leadership must partner with the state government and be proactive in addressing the issues of poverty, unemployment and insecurity.
“We must use our comparative advantage in agriculture to create wealth and transform our communities. My vision is to get the teeming youths of Tiv land with idle capacity to work the work.”
The Monarch also expressed dissatisfaction with the level of agriculture practiced in Nigeria stating it does not have the capacity to take the country out of poverty.
Ayatse said he honoured the invitation to address the gathering out of passion and focus and that of the Benue state government’s on agriculture which is the pre-occupation of his people.
