The Federal Government yesterday assured that it would do everything humanly possible to reduce smuggling of poultry products to the barest minimum.
To this end, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and relevant stakeholders would next week begin a raid of poultry markets across the country to ascertain the source of the products and determine whether or not they have been smuggled.
The Minister of State for Agriculture, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri disclosed this yesterday during a working visit to Amo Farm Sieberer Hatchery Limited in Awe, Oyo State, assuring that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari was resolute about killing smuggling.
The Group Managing Director of AMO farms and its subsidiaries, Dr. Ayoola Oduntan while highlighting some of the challenges the company faced, including lack of electricity, heavy tax burden, lack of access to single-digit funding, said the farm had destroyed over N200 million worth of day old chicks because of low sale, adding that smuggling had virtually crippled poultry farmers in Nigeria.
However the Minister reiterated that the FG would begin to go from markets to markets to seize smuggled poultry products to discourage their sale and patronage in the market, as well as encourage the local farmers to expand and maximize their gains.
