The Plateau Government, through the Anchor Borrower’s programme, has distributed N9 million worth of farm inputs to 225 farmers in the state.
Mrs Linda Barau, the state Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, said while distributing the items on Wednesday in Jos, that the programme was aimed at empowering farmers in the state.
According to her, the gesture will go a long way to create job opportunities for the teeming unemployed youths.
“What we are doing today is geared toward empowering our farmers and making Plateau the hub of food production in Nigeria.
“We all know that this present administration is keen on making agriculture a lucrative business, and so, we will do everything to better the lot of our farmers.’’
The commissioner gave an assurance that the state would introduce more farmer-friendly policies to improve on the yield and also boost the state’s agriculture sector.
Mr Luka Madaki, the Special Adviser to Gov. Simon Lalong of Plateau on Agriculture and Rural Development, urged farmers to make judicious use of the inputs.
In a remark, Mr Joshua Bitrus, the Chairman, All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Plateau Chapter, while receiving the inputs, commended the state government for the gesture.
Bitrus said that initiative would go a long way to reduce the sufferings of farmers in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the beneficiaries were drawn from the 17 local government areas of the state.
