In the light of ongoing outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Eastern Europe and in China, the Philippine government has temporarily banned pig and pork imports from China, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Russia and Ukraine. Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol has ordered the immediate suspension of the processing, evaluation of the application and issuance of sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) import clearance for these commodities.

Earlier, Pork Producers Federation of the Philippines President Edwin Chen told Asian Agribiz that the country must be careful to keep the virus out, noting it would “wreak havoc on the local livestock industry if it comes in.” In a separate order, Mr Piñol also prohibited the use of catering food wastes and leftovers from international and domestic airports and seaports for swill feeding of local swine throughout the country.
