Philippine corn production and supply likely down in 2018

Philippine corn production for marketing year 2017/18 is forecast to drop to only 7.98 mt as production area is seen to decline to less than 2.6 million hectares. The latest corn situation and outlook report from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed that the country’s corn hectarage and yield fell by 2.3% and 1.1% year-on-year respectively in Q2, and is expected to decline further in July-September.

This is further exacerbated by the recent typhoon Mangkhut, which hit corn production areas in Northern Luzon, which led to the government announcing imports to ease supply problems. Poultry and livestock raisers urged the government to allow corn imports at lower tariff even prior to the typhoon, to address rising corn prices.
