Nigeria Must Commercialise Research To Generate Increase IGR, Research institutions in the country need to commercialize their research products to increase Internally Generated Revenue, according to the Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development Heineken Lokpobiri.
Lokpobiri noted this recently during a two-day facility tour of the three research institutes domiciled in Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, Zaria, including Institute for Agricultural Research, IAR, National Agricultural Extension Research and Liaison Services, NAERLS, and the National Animal Production Research Institute, NAPRI.
According to him commercialization of these institutes has become imperative, because government cannot shoulder funding of their activities, hence their managements need to partner with donor agencies and development partners for support.
“We appreciate what the institutes are doing in the agricultural sector over the years. We acknowledge your achievements despite challenges faced over the years,” the minister added.
“But there is the need for further investment in research and manpower development to enable the country achieves self-sufficiency in food production.
“That is why ommercialisation of the institutes has become imperative as government alone cannot continue to provide the required funding for the institutes.
“The managements should partner with relevant donor agencies to support them in this regard. If you don’t commercialize, you cannot maximize your potentials.”
