Federal Group for Operations in North America Nigeria "C" Owerri continues to fulfill its duties to combat smuggling and income generation.
The group produced seizures from 12 cars and 881 bags of rice, all with a duty paid more than N385 million.
Controller Olusemire Kayode, the new compartment zone controller who made this famous, demonstrating the attacks committed by officers on the axis of Benin, said that the seizures were caused by the hard work and diligence of the unit's employees.
Featuring luxury cars, three of which are bullet-proof, Kayode said that the vehicles on the interception had no documentation and the appropriate national security adviser's permission to import bullet-proof vehicles, hence their seizures.
He advised importers of such cars to pay the corresponding duties and avoid tax evasion.
Kayode said: "Most of these cars cost millions of Naira.
"If they can afford to buy these vehicles, they should not shy away from paying a fee."
Kayode assured that the anti-smuggling operations of the unit would not fall under his watch, and the descendants of the smugglers would be ripped off in the zone.
He also urged importers to familiarize themselves with the existing laws regulating trade in the country so as not to violate the law.
After revealing part of the seized rice, Kayode gave details of the consignment of rice hidden under the heap of banana in the truck.
He explained that the officers had no habit of hindering local traders in their daily business.
However, the officers, acting on the tip, checked the car and found a violation.
He voiced a warning for the smugglers and urged the Nigerians to support the local agricultural industry and buy rice produced locally.
He further stated that the ban on rice imports through land borders still remains in force and urged the public to step up the agricultural sector and the economic well-being of the country, patronizing locally produced products.
Thanks to inter-agency cooperation, support to the media and the public, the Controller is confident that smuggling will be reduced to a minimum.
