Kebbi government commended for investing 10% annual budget to agriculture

Cobbi State, Oxfam International, Mr. Olumide Ojo, on Monday, thanked the state government for investing 10 percent of its annual budget in the agricultural sector.

Ojo gave praise during a press conference to mark World Food Day 2018 in Birinin Kebbi.

Oxfam is an international confederation of 20 NGOs working with partners in more than 90 countries to end the injustice that causes poverty.

“The Kebbi government is consistently processing more than 10 percent of its annual budget into the agricultural sector from 2016 to 2018.

“Budget allocations for the agriculture and rural development sector for 2015 are 11.4 percent, and in 2016 – 10.1 percent,” he said.

Coordinator Oxfam said state investments in agriculture also recorded achievements, adding that the state also noted an increase in annual agricultural production, especially for rice, wheat, sorghum and corn.

He also appreciated the level of commitment of the state government, which, he said, attracted investments from the public and private sectors to the state.

Ojo explained that Oxfam International and the Knowledge Sharing Center (DEC), with the support of the European Union, the EU, are working with governmental and non-governmental stakeholders to promote food security.

The coordinator said that joint efforts are also aimed at strengthening the resilience of vulnerable groups in communities.

He said that a survey by Oxfam in selected rural communities in the state in March 2017 showed that at least 67 percent of people living in rural communities do not have food security.

Ojo said that interested people are those whose livelihoods are in the field of agriculture and other resources.

“More disturbing is the fact that women and young people make up more than 42 percent of those who mostly suffer from the ugly food and nutrition in rural areas,” he said.

Aujo urged federal, state, and local governments to develop and implement specific policies that would boost agricultural production and strengthen the sustainability of agriculture in the face of uncertain weather and climate variables.

“To achieve zero hunger, stakeholders must work together to raise awareness of hunger, hunger and malnutrition, especially with regard to the rural population in Africa.”
