Lagos- Prince Wale Oyekoya, an agriculturist who is the Chief Executive Officer of Bama Farms Limited has said that it is a mirage if government is telling the citizens that the nation is self sufficient in rice production.
Oyekoya dropped the hint while speaking in an interview with Daily Independent, stating that the price of rice is beyond the reach of the common man, that even the local rice is very scarce to see in the market.
According to him, “How sufficient are we when we are buying a bag of rice for N27, 000 or more in the market? We are not even producing enough to make us self sufficient and with the ban, foreign rice and poultry products still find their ways into our markets.”
Oyekoya further stated that the border closure for a year now is supposed to be a blessing to the country and farmers but it is not.
He said so many factors have eroded the gains such as; climate change, COVID-19 pandemic, government summersault policies, lack of good infrastructures, lack of modern farm tools to improve on food production, lack of state governments’ sincerity to issue CofO to farmers and lack of adequate funds.
“Nigeria is definitely on the brink of famine for lack of sufficiency on food supply. The price of food is skyrocketing now compare to last year and year before,” he said.
Speaking further he stated that there are too many deceits from the governments from the way they propagate agriculture sector where there is no adequate support for local farmers.
He said some farmers are even leaving the sector for lack of funds, supports and enabling environment from the government.
“All the intervention funds in the spread of newspapers do not get to the real farmers instead get to the hands of political farmers.”
“Poultry farmers are lamenting now for lack of patronage and expensive feeds where maize have become gold or non available at the markets.”
Adding, “To me, we are far away from food sufficiency in the country and it will continue this way until the three tiers of government get back to the drawing board and realise that their policy is not working and the present government have failed the citizens.”
