The National Extension Services for Agriculture and Research (NAERLS), Ahmadou Bello University (ABU), Zaria, said the country would witness a shortage of rice, sorghum and cassava during the 2018 rainy season.
The Institute, in its agricultural activity review (APS) for the rainy season in 2018 in Nigeria, was presented to interested parties at the passing 11th National Agricultural Exhibition at kilometer 28 along the Abuja-Keffi highway, saying that the reason for the expected low harvest was floods across the country. "
NARLLS, however, said that in 2018 there will be "a bountiful harvest for most crops, with the exception of rice, sorghum, and cassava."
Meanwhile, Assistant Director of the Institute, Professor Sani Yusuf Ahmad, who led the institute’s team to the AGRIC show, said they worked hard to update the poor state of the consulting services in the country.
Professor Ahmad said with the introduction of an e-expansion scheme, millions of Nigerian farmers across the country will be reached in their local languages.
He reiterated that the essence of the innovation was to provide information to farmers in all areas of agriculture, covering the best agronomic practices, prices for commodities, the supply of raw materials; and weather information.
