The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) will on Friday, November 1, 2019 launch the first e-commerce website for Breeder & Foundation Seed in Nigeria.
The online seed hub tagged GoSeed will provide access to clean, improved varieties of seeds which have over the years been a major challenge to achieving high productivity and profitability in agricultural production in Africa.
According to Saleh Victor (Communication Executive IITA Business Incubation Platform), “Improved seed varieties may be unavailable, sold at high costs or in adulterated forms to smallholder farmers in rural areas, thereby promoting the use of farmer-saved seeds. This has contributed to consistently low yields and poor income levels, increased rural poverty and underdevelopment in the sector”.
IITA GoSeed, a unit of the IITA Business Incubation Platform (BIP), is responsible for the commercial promotion of early generation seeds of improved crop varieties generated by IITA and other CGIAR Centres across the globe. Our focus crops include bananas and plantain, cassava, cowpea, maize, rice, soybean and yam.
“At IITA GoSeed, we are passionate about improving farmers’ access to clean seeds and creating a viable seed ecosystem in Nigeria and across Africa. To help achieve this, we are launching the first e-commerce website in Nigeria where breeder and foundation seeds of the best improved varieties can now be ordered online at www.iitagoseed.com. Locations of our seed fields can also be accessed on the GoSeed Tracker via the website”.
With our e-commerce solution, we hope to contribute to removing the challenge of accessing quality improved seeds no matter the location of our customers across Africa! Orders can now be made online, and seed companies have the option to pick-up their seeds or have it delivered at a location of their choice.
