Secretary, Sokoto State Chapter of the Agriculture and Allied Employees Union of Nigeria ( AAEUN), Mr Shehu Manu has lamented what he noted as selective implementation of hazard allowance both in the federal, state and local government levels.
Speaking to Daily Trust on Sunday he said some departments of agriculture are given hazard allowances while others were not, describing it as demoralizing.
As hazardous as agricultural activities are, some departments in the federal ministry of agriculture, in the states and local governments are enjoying hazard allowances, while others are yet to benefit,” he stated.
Manu noted that Agriculture had remained the critical component of human existence and one of the most hazardous professions in the world.
He advocated a uniformed implementation of hazard allowances for agricultural workers in Nigeria.
“The federal government should direct the immediate approval and implementation of the hazard allowances to those that are being left out. This will motivate them to give out their best in the profession they know best and by extension encourage massive food production and enhance workers’ productivity to the noble profession,” Manu added
He commended the federal government for its current efforts to restore the lost glory of the agricultural sector.
Manu noted that such efforts would facilitate massive food production, both for domestic consumption and export to earn foreign exchange.
The scribe also expressed happiness with the federal government’s diversification of the economy.
This, if achieved, will create more job opportunities, reduce poverty, unemployment and youths restiveness in the country,” he averred
