Gombe Commences Aerial Control Of Quelea Birds

The Gombe State government in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture has commenced a campaign against quelea birds in parts of the state.

Launching the campaign, the state Commissioner of Agriculture, Alhaji Dahiru Buba Biri,
said the exercise will check and reduce the menace of quelea birds.

He said the prompt intervention by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture to carry out the
aerial spray would reduce damage to farmlands.
Represented by a director in the ministry, Mr Daniel Obidah, he said the birds usually
attack farms in the early stage of the dry season farming, adding that the exercise will
benefit people of the state.

The Zonal Pest Control Officer, Dr Tadi James, commended the efforts of the federal
government in tackling quelea birds. He said quelea birds can destroy farmlands before
crops mature.

Our correspondent reports that the exercise is expected to last for four days in the
affected areas of Nafada, Balanga Dam, Dadin Kowa Dam and Gaji, a border town
between Gombe and Yobe states.
