Don Seeks Special Funding for Agricultural Extension Services

To end the limitations confronting graduates of various entrepreneurial programmes, particularly in the area of Agricultural Extension Services, Professor of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, University of Ibadan (UI), Ademola Ladele, has called for institutionalisation of policies that will create funding arrangement for special university entrepreneurial programme.

Delivering his inaugural lecture, titled, “Extension Everywhere, Extending Nowhere: The Cacophony of Agricultural Extension in Nigeria,” at the Trenchard Hall of the institution, Ladele stated that government and the corporate organisations should strive to provide funds for graduates in entrepreneurial endeavour to enable them take off and achieve the purpose of their training.

Limiting his discourse to challenges of Agricultural Extension Services, he hinted that the services grew out of the need to solve problems for those who had non-formal education. He said these farmers would be involved in an on-going process of sharing useful information that will assist in acquiring the necessary capability to utilise these information and technologies effectively.
He said, “The strength of agriculture extension is presented in a three-dimensional model as deep, broad, and methodical. The depth generates from its application in many disciplines to positively affect human livelihoods. It is described as being broad based on the diversity of disciplines from which it must tap knowledge to be effective. While it is methodical, deriving from the research tools and methods adopted for use in arriving at empirical basis for problem solving.
“So there is need to institutionalise policies that will create funding arrangement for special university entrepreneurial programme for the graduates of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development; create more rural community radio across the nation; and professionalise extension practice.”
