By Joseph Agumagu

Acting Director General of National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA), Prof. Alex Akpa, has urged us to take advantage of Biotechnology and its tools in solving the myriad of problems confronting us in this era of Covid-19 pandemic.

He said that Biotechnology is a very powerful tool that has the potentials of helping us address a lot of situations including disease outbreaks, hunger, drought and malnutrition.

In the opening of the 2020 OFAB Webinar series, Prof Akpa said that the Covid-19 pandemic has placed on us a lot of restrictions and as scientists, they must strive to find solution to challenges facing mankind.

He said: “The webinar therefore is our attempt to fashion out strategies on how citizens can take advantage of biotechnology to address the pandemic.”

“Biotechnology and its tools are not new to us as a country, we have used it to solve problems before and our potentials to increase areas where it can be deployed is gradually increasing.”

He added: “My appeal for an increase in allocation to research and development in the country especially in the biotechnology sub-sector is because it will ensure that we take advantage of the critical mass of graduates universities are turning out every year to properly coordinate our R&D activities in such a way to answer national challenges.”

The Acting DG noted that science and technology remains the building blocks of development and any country that ignores science and technology has decided not to move forward.
