Sources from the Southsouth geopolitical zone of the country can confirm that Over 120 people have received training on ginger and mushroom cultivation and value chains development in Delta State.
The programme was mainly organised for youths and women from the three Local Government Areas Ukwani, Ndokwa West, and Udokwa East, which are all part of the Constituency of Hon. Ossai Nicholas Ossai who happens to be the facilitator of the training and empowerment scheme.
The programme which took three days took place in Kwale, Ndokwa West local government gave room for a collaboration with the National Horticultural Research Institute (NIHORT), Ibadan, Oyo State and was aimed at giving the dividence of democracy through an entrepreneurial skills in cultivation of Ginger and Mushroom, and processing of the produce into various products and value addition of the two agro commodities.
Dr. Abayomi Akeem Olaniyan, the Executive Director, NIHORT, maintained that the choice of the two agricultural money spinning crops are easy to produce and marketable. He also said that mushroom and ginger cultivation and processing could create room for employment and earn foreign exchange.
He said the Nigerian ginger is a spice of the best quality in the world, hence highly sought after and highlighted the nutritional and medicinal values of ginger and mushroom.
Reiterated the fact that the empowerment was not the first time the legislator will be empowering his people, the sponsor’s representative who is the Senior Special Assistant to Delta State Governor, Hon. Ashibogwu Nze Kingsley believes in making responsible leadership of his followers through empowering them to orientate their lives economically to stay out of poverty.
However, the training and empowerment were in three batches, with each batch for each local government of the Federal constituency. It was also interesting to know that 45 youths and women trainees participated at the second batch of the training involving the Ndokwa East local government.
The trainees were exposed to production techniques of mushroom and ginger, post harvest handlings, processing, utilisations, packaging & Marketing. Book-keeping and accounts for business management.
